INA181: alternate current sensor IC with better performance

Part Number: INA181
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA281

We are using INA181A1 for shunt voltage measurement (SOC cal).

  • We could see the gain error for this IC is on higher side.
  • It would be great if you can suggest drop in replacement with better error performance and also with higher common mode voltage capability.
  • Hello Navya,

I have some questions regarding your use of this part:

What is the application where INA181 is currently used? What common mode range is desired? What led to choosing the INA181 originally? Is bidirectional capability of INA181 necessary?

If bidirectional capability is needed there is not a part that can simply be dropped in with same package/pin organization and maybe something to consider with future board iterations. There are many parts with greater common mode range and accuracy (i.e. INA281, INA296) however these are not matching pin configurations.

The INA181 is a cost optimized part is this important for your application?

  • Hello joseph,

    thanks for your quick response.

INA181 is used for shunt current measurement on HV voltage(48V),>+/-48v common mode voltage is desired, the gain and offset error expecting around 0.1% and 100uv/m we are expecting, the INA181 part is unidirectional in application.Yes, Cost optimization is also the important factor.

So it would be better if the suggested IC meet the requirements.

  • Apologies for the response time,

We do not have a device that allows for +/- 48 V common mode. There are devices available with common mode ranges up to 48 V but not extending down to -48 V. (lowest minimum common mode offered is -22V).  Below are some application notes that speak to shifting the effective common mode which may allow you to reach -48 V common mode. You will not be able to do both. Additionally, I would note that INA181 is a cost optimized device and devices with the greatly increased performance specifications you desire are going to cost more across the board.
