Yes, these internal diodes exist.
External diodes might be helpful to avoid a current through the internal diodes; see section 2.4 of the Application Design Guidelines for LM324 and LM358 Devices.

Internal diodes are present. External diodes will share the input current flow. However voltage more negative than -300mV may cause phase reversal.
