INA229: Power meter function realization with PF measurement

Part Number: INA229
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA223

Hi expert,

Customer needs power meter IC to be embedded in their ACDC power supply product to measure the power supply's input power and PF, like a power meter feature. I only thought of TI's digital power monitor IC such as INA229, but I'm not sure if it could measure PF without adding MCU. Do you have any solution/recommendation? Thanks!

Joyce

  • Hi Joyce,

Unfortunately all of our power monitoring devices require some type of I2C communication to change settings and configure. However, we do have the INA223. The INA223 is an analog out device, which is I2C programmable for certain settings. If you are okay with the device default settings, you may not require an MCU to change settings and it may work without it. Here are the default settings located in the configuration register:

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Best,

    Mohamed

  • Hi Mohamed,

I'm not sure you've got my meaning. I'm looking for a solution that could measure a ACDC power product's input voltage, current, power, and power factor. I know INA229/223 could measure current + voltage and come out with power value, but what about power factor? Do you have any solution to come out with the power factor?

    Thanks.

    Joyce

  • Hi Joyce,

Unfortunately there is no power factor output on any of our devices. You could calculate it based off Vbus and Vsense however.
