Hi King,
By reversing the polarity you would have a negative voltage on the data line and the diode will begin to conduct at voltages above - 0.5 V. This diode could be damaged if conducting continiously during a polarity reversal.
If you want to protect an interface like USB from reverse polarity on the data lines, you will need a bi-directional device.
