Hello, we're currently utilizing the INA4180 to sense DC motor current, but it's only detecting current in one direction. When the motor reverses, it no longer senses current, even though it did initially. This issue arose after switching the DC motor model. Can you assist me in troubleshooting this problem?

    Hello Appreciated Engineer,

    The INA4180 is unidirectional. It cannot measure bidirectional current. The INA4181 is bidirectional because it has a REF pin which can bias the output voltage out of GND saturation when load = 0A.

    Could you try the INA4181 with REF = Vs/2?

    Thank you for responding. Oh, that's new information for us.

    I'm curious about something: the same IC worked perfectly fine with another DC motor that we used previously, but when we switched to the new DC motor, we encountered this issue. Could you please provide some clarification on this matter?

    Hey Aswin,

    Would you please help me understand what you mean when INA4180 "worked perfectly fine with another DC motor"?

    Was the effective motor current the same? What is the motor current supposed to look like? How negative does the current go?

    Is there any data showing the discrepancy between the motors?

    May I please see a schematic for both motor tests, if they are not the same?
