Hello,

I work in a company that wants to design a new transmitter based on XTR's devices. We have alreary developed a temperature transmitter that uses the XTR108, but it is applicable only for RTD sensors. We would like to design a device that has a universal input, what means that could work with RTD, termocouple or potentiometer sensors.I know that to meet these needs it's necessary to use a microcontroller. But, the feature most needed is the compatibility with the HART protocol.

I checked some devices and notice that the XTR115 and XTR116 probably meet my needs. So, I would like to know which other devices are Hart compatible.

Hello Juliana,

I'm glad you've designed the XTR108 into an RTD application.

Besides the XTR111 and the XTR300 all of our other XTR devices support a HART interface. The only reason the XTR111 and XTR300 do not work for HART is that a chopping current-mirror was used to reduce device offset and the switching frequency interferes with the HART communication protocol.

Hi Juliana,

Although I believe the XTR108 will support HART, I need to defer to my colleague, Ian Williams, who is the main support engineer for the XTR108 and other signal conditioning ICs.

I have not tested the XTR108 for compatibility with HART, but since it also uses a chopping current-mirror my initial guess is that it will not work. I will investigate this further and confirm.

Hello Ian,

Thanks for the answer. In any case, my real intention is to use another XTR device to design a transmitter with universal input, since the XTR108 doesn't support all kind of sensors, like termocouple. Problably, our choice will be the XTR115 or XTR116.

Does XTR105 support HART interface? ?

if not can you suggest me any 3 wire 4-20mA sourcing Transmitter which do support HART interface?

Hello James,

Yes, the XTR105 should support HART protocol. However, it is not a 3-wire device and cannot be operated as one.

The XTR110 does not have the same chopping current mirrors as the XTR111 and XTR300 and should work.
