Hi TI,

I have an application in which the inputs of the TLV9032 will see a voltage higher than the supply voltage. Is it OK to clamp the input voltage with the internal input TVS diodes in combination with input current limited to under 1mA? Or is it better to just use some external clamping diodes and clamp the voltage under the abs. max. value of 5.7V? I would just like to avoid adding additional diodes in the BOM if possible.

    The TLV9022 does not have upper ESD clamps, so there will not be anything to "clamp" in the positive direction. External clamping will be required so that the input does not exceed the 6V abs max.

    Also see the datasheet sections 6.4.3.2 through 6.4.4 (pages 21-22) that explain the inputs. An external clamp will be needed if the voltage could exceed 6V, and I would recommend the clamping current to be 1mA or less. The clamp can be a Zener, or, you can use a standard diode to clamp to a supply of Vcc-0.8V (as long as the supply can sink current - most regulators cannot sink current).
