TPA6404Q1EVM: Questions regarding the use of the TP6404 amplifier / EVM software

Was told by support to make a post here so copying questions from my support chat to here, thank you in advance.

Once I have setup and configured my amplifer using PurePath, can I use the amp in a standalone manner for embedded applications on edge?.

Also an application-specific question: Can you confirm that I can combine channels 1 and 2 in a BTL mode and channel 3 and 4 also in a BTL mode? When we do so, each of the four amplifier lines can drive at most 2 Ohms each. Would that be correct?

Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi Nick,

    In your application, you will need to use I2C to read and write to the device.  There is no memory in the device.  You need a controller in your application.

    All 4 channels can drive 2 ohm loads in BTL mode.

  • Thank you. In our application, the input to the amplifier will be an analog signal (from the output of our DAC). Therefore, we will not need the amp to perform any signal conversion or generation. Once we setup and configure the amplifier, I am hoping that we can simply use the RCA lines to connect our DAC output to the amplifier's analog input terminals, and get the amplified signal at the output. Thus I am assuming that we do not need to utilize I2C for our application. Would appreciate if you cold confirm.

  • Hi Nick,

    It seems you want to program it and forget it.  Unfortunately, it needs to be monitored for fault conditions that would place the output stage into Hi-Z until it is acted upon via I2C to see what the fault it and to place the output stage back into play mode.  Correct me if I am wrong about the "Program and Forget it" idea.

  • Yes, that's indeed what we wish to do. We want to program the amplifier and forget it, and hope that it will keep working with the setup that it's programmed to. Just to clarify, should we assume that this is not possible due to the potential faults that may occur? If so, are faults common during regular operations? And finally, if this amp is not suitable for our needs, can you recommend any other TI amp with up to 60 KHz bandwidth? We bought these amps since they have high bandwidths (up to 100 KHz) and they have multiple channels. But we would be happy to switch to another TI amp as long as we can get 60 KHz bandwidth and preferably 2 channels or more.

    With a carefully designed product, faults should not occur.  You can read in the datasheet how the faults are handled.  You can make the decision on your risk to use the device.
