LMV358: Inquiry on IC issues at high temperature

Part Number: LMV358

Tool/software:

Hello experts,

My customer is using LMV358 and had some questions regarding when the IC ambient temp is higher than ABS value,

1. When the ambient temp is over 150℃ for a while, what kind of issues may happen?

2. Would it matter if the IC is being powered or not when the ambient temp is higher than 150? In other words, if the IC were not powered and completely turned off, while ambient temp went over 150℃, would it have the same type of damage as if it were being powered?

3. If the ambient temp went over 150℃ then later was lowered to 50℃, and afterwards the IC operates normally, is it ok to keep using the IC? Or could it cause future problems?

Thank you in advance for your help and support.

  • Hello Jade,

It really depends on customer's risk tolerance and reason for the temperature excursion. General advice below.

    1) Heat is the enemy of semiconductors. Every 25C can make devices age 3X as fast.  Electromigration, metal moving, is one main problem. Above 150C, there may be others but I am less familiar with them.

    2) Off is better because electromigration needs heat and current flow. No current when off

    3) More of the IC expected lifetime was removed than usual, so there is that.
