INA106: INA106 Common input and Differential input range spec

Hi team,

My customer is using INA106 for voltage sensing, VS+ VS- are +/-12V supply. Measure a voltage+ to GND voltage signal, max voltage is 6Vrms, so INA106 will see differential input 6V, and common mode input voltage at V+ input pin also is 6V. They are confused about INA106 datasheet common mode & differential input range spec.

May I know is it a typo on INA106 datasheet? Why common mode input and differential input range speconly have a min +/-1V spec and +/-11V spec?

Typically those range should related to VS supply values, but I didn't find more information on INA106 datasheet. Could you pls comment on INA106 common mode and differential input range detail specs? min, typ, and max values.

  • In theory, a "common-mode" specification applies only to opamps with negative feedback, where the two input pins have the same voltage.

    In the INA106 datasheet, "differential" describes the voltage between the two input pins, while "common-mode" describes the absolute voltage (relative to ground = V−) at each pin.

    The INA106 has a gain of 10, so a differential input voltage of 6 V would result in an output voltage of 60 V, which is not possible.

    Clemens is correct in his description of common and differential mode signals to the difference amplifier. 

    There is no typo in the INA106 datasheet.
