OPA659: Regarding the Input and ESD Protection of the OPA659

The absolute maximum rating for the input voltage of the OPA659 is ±Vs.

According to "8.2.1 Input and ESD Protection" on the datasheet, there is a protection diode at the input to prevent voltages above Vs + Vf from being applied.

Even if there is a protection diode, a voltage that is Vf greater than the rated voltage will be applied to the input. Is this ok? If it is applied for an extremely short period of time, like ESD, is it ok?

Please let me know the value of Vf and how long it is okay to exceed the rated value without any problems.

  • When you apply such a voltage, a current will flow through the diode. As section 8.2.1 tells you, you must ensure that this current is below 30 mA; it also tells you how to do this.

    The forward voltage is neither specified nor guaranteed.

    Clemens is correct. The forward voltage depends on process and device design. As far as how long this can occur, these diodes' purpose is primarily to steer a pulse a few nanoseconds in length as you will see with a typical ESD event. During an overstress event, which is different than an ESD event, we can get longer duration events. This is where using limiting series resistors become useful and limiting the current below the limit of 30mA is key for these longer events.
