INA250: Output behavior and Overload recovery time

Part Number: INA250

Tool/software:

Hello team,

I have a question about INA250.

Does the device behave phase reversal when ideal output level is expected to be higher/lower than supply rail? or will it be just saturated?

If output should be saturated in such condition, could you let me know also overload recovery time?

Best regards,

  • Hi Sato-san,

When the output voltage exceeds supply, the output level will level off and saturate. We don't spec the overload recovery time of this device on our datasheet, but this can be tested on your system by applying a square wave voltage (starting at Vs-0.5 to Vs+0.3) and observing the output. Please not that the recovery time from output greater than Vs will be different from recovery time below GND.

  • Hello Mallika-san,

Could you please do the measurement using EVM if there is no data?

    Best regards,

  • Hi Sato-san,

I'm looking into this, I'll get back to you soon.

  • Hi Sato-san,

In the following scope shots, CH1 is the input to the INA250A2EVM and F1 is a math function that converts the input CH1 to an input current monitoring waveform. CH2 is the output of the EVM.

Supply voltage (Vs) is 3V, gain is 500mV/A, Ref connected to GND.

Case(i) When the input current is increased from 5A to 6.5A (waveform F1), the output waveform increases from 2.5V to 3V. (Railing the output)

When input current is dropped back to 5V, it takes ~ 25 us for the change to reflect in the output waveform and total of ~80us for the output to settle.

case(ii) When the input current is increased from 0.5A to 2.3A (waveform F1), the output waveform increases from 2.5V to 2.75V. (output in linear range)

When input current is dropped back to 5V, it takes ~ 3.2 us for the output to follow the input and a total of ~ 8us for output to settle.

  • Hello Mallika-san,

    Thanks for the measurement result.

Do you think equivalent result will be expected with also INA250A3 in terms of the recovery time.

I think the difference is only gain and internal amplifier is same so the behavior shouldn't be different much.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Sato-san,

Yes you're right, I don't expect the output behavior to change significantly between different gains.
