BUF634A: Driving Variety of Headset Impedances

Part Number: BUF634A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: THS3491, THS3470

Tool/software:

The BUF634A can be used to drive many typical headsets used for home/commercial use.

Aircraft headsets though use 150/300/600 ohms plus Military use 8 ohms.

The BUF634A does not have enough drive capability to drive 8 ohms hard enough to meet requirements. Maybe parallel two?

If you pick an amp IC for 8 ohms it won't meet the drive requirements of higher impedance headsets.

What system design approach should be taken?  Two driver circuits that switch over depending on the connected impedance?

Never seen it done...

  • Hi Barry,

Paralleling multiple BUF634A devices could be an option to increase the output current to drive really heavy loads. We do have devices such as the THS3491 and a new device in the THS3470 that is in preproduction that has even higher output drive. Customers often use the THS3491 for driving heavy loads as it offers high output drive with a wide bandwidth when the BUF634A does not have enough output drive.

    Best Regards.
