AFE031: technical support for development of a sensor-based product

Part Number: AFE031
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA521, , THS6222, PLC010935BP, THS6232, THS6212, TIDA-010935, OPA2673, OPA2675

Tool/software:

We are developing a product for street light control and runway light control and for data communication purpose would like to use PLCC as communication media.
We are NGO working for extending support in the area of Interdisciplinary Research in India.
We take the challenges from the Government, urban local bodies, industry and society and with help of veterans and professors develop the appropriate solutions.
In my personal capacity I worked in power sector as planning engineer for power line carrier communication system for the management of power grid for almost 10 years.
We have gone through Design Guide - TIDA-00067 - tidu160   and interested to use your solution in our product.
Please advise how we can get your technological guidance is adopting your solution.

  • Hello Sharad,

Thank you for contacting our team; we are excited about your excitement for PLC in infrastructure, including runway light control!

We have a few different paths to support a PLC design from our product line:

    1. We have our AFE03x devices, including AFE031.  These include onboard digital-to-analog block, filtering, zero-crossing detection, PGA, and line driver to enable narrowband PLC.  A related device is our OPA521 line driver, which is also narrowband in frequency.

    2. We have discrete line drivers, including our THS6212, THS6222, and THS6232 PLC line drivers.  These three related devices specialize in mid-band and narrowband PLC driving, with higher supply voltages and good out of band suppression.  A good reference design for implementing a PLC solution with these parts is our TIDA-010935 design.  While this design is written for solar solutions, the core technology is adaptable to other markets, including the lighting projects your described.  We have an orderable of this design, the PLC010935BP, which can be bought alongside a TI MSPM0 launchpad for evaluation and development.  There is sample code available too.

    • While the PLC010935BP is a UART to PLC design, the line driver (THS6222 or THS6232) can be used with any modulation scheme and PLC AFE.  This includes OOK, ASK, FSK, OFDM, etc.  Our line drivers provide specs which can meet project needs, they are not limited to a specific modulation scheme as the line drivers are analog input, analog output.

    3. We also have higher output current dual current-feedback devices, our OPA2673 and OPA2675.  While these devices are only 12V supply, they do offer higher output current drive and good distortion performance.  Both devices feature two internal current-feedback amplifiers which can be used in one of three ways:

    1. Both amplifiers tied together in parallel for stronger output current to the same load
    2. Each amplifier used separately for on different single-ended signal channels
    3. Both amplifiers used together for the two pieces of a differential input signal, to drive a differential output signal to a load

Please let me know which technologies and devices are intriguing to your team.  There are variables on performance, cost, complexity, and customization to consider.  AFE devices will not be the lowest cost, THS62x2 devices will be the lowest cost.

    Best,

    Alec
