OPA2187: Output short circuit

Part Number: OPA2187
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ALM2402F-Q1, ALM2402-Q1, ALM2403-Q1

Tool/software:

In the datasheet, it says that the output can be shorted to ground continuously.  Can it also be shorted to the power supply? (Obviously not at the same time.)  Thanks.

  • Hi Rick,

Can it also be shorted to the power supply?

You should not without limiting the sink current at the op amp's output. The source current  when the output is short circuit is only rated at 25C or room temperature. At elevated temperature, the thermal protection circuit may be activated and will try to protect itself when Tj exceeds approx. 150C.

If you are able to limit the sink or source current via a resistor in series with output, say limiting up to +/-20-30mA, then the op amp may be able to short to a power supply below or equal to Vcc supply (Vcc <40Vdc is the max for the op amp).

Here is an application note for ALM2403-Q1/ALM2402-Q1/ALM2402F-Q1, where the op amp's output short circuit to Vcc is a requirement without a damage, but it has to be designed with care in order to survive such short duration tests.
