Tool/software:

Hello, We need some support.  We are having some trouble with a shutter flicker on the chips I recently ordered. Our R&D Team would like to use a specific chip which is really hard to order because they need special markings on the chip. Digikey one of your distributors asked us to check with you directly to see if you can help? Is there anyway to find the old chips with the correct marking on them?

Thank you,

  • Summary:
    • Issue is with TI chips marked T1I8
      • Results in shutter flicker
      • Investigation found that marking corresponds to new die (TiB)
        • These would also have new chip site origin CSO and/or country of origin COO
          • CSO: CU3, CCO: CHN
          • CSO: RFB, CCO: USA
    • Recommendation was to go back to “old” chip
      • Package Marking:
        • T1IS
      • Chip Site of Origin (20L) CSO:
        • SHE
      • Chip Country of Origin (21L) CCO:
        • USA
      • Dan confirmed chips marked T1IS resolved issue
    • Becca ordered chips from Digikey
      • Unable to specify CSO or marking
      • These were marked T1I8, COO: USA, and CSO: Unknown
      • They did not work – same issue as other chips marked T1I8
    • Melissa reached out to TI and was told to enter a complaint and reach out to distributors for ability to sort
  • Next Steps:
    • Based on above:  Need to ask Digikey or other distributor for chips marked T1IS which will have CSO: SHE and COO: USA
      • Becca reaching out to Technical Support
    • If this is not possible, we need to look at alternate solutions
      • Note: Dan had tested in a one-off that a chip marked T1IG also resolved the issue

Thanks,

  • Hello Rebecca,

The TL331 has been through several PCN's. These PCN's are available on the Digikey TL331IDBVR product page.

Please see the LM339 family application note that summarizes the changes, sections 3.6 and 6.3:

Application Design Guidelines for LM339, LM393, TL331 Family Comparators

Please note that the "T1I8, T1IG, T1IL and T1IS" markings are not date codes, but differences in assembly sites. Different assembly sites can use different die depending on die availability.

The date code is encoded around the edges of the package top as a sequence of lines. We would need to see close up photos of the package, or, photo of the label to determine which die is used. Note that the "old" (Ji1) die and the new TiB die are both from USA (SHE vs. RFB). Please see the table in section 3.5 of the appnote.

The short answer is that the "old" SHE chip is no longer produced and no longer available. This is not a long term solution. Only the TiB version RFB will be available into the future.

The root cause needs to be found. There should not be any difference between the devices when operated within the datasheet specifications. The biggest issue we have seen is customers violating the "both inputs above" rule (see section 6.8 of the appnote).

Can they supply schematics and scope photos of the good and bad operation for us to review to find the issue?
