Single supply operational amplifier

In TI  portfolio of  precision amplifier, some of the op-amp are particularly specified for single supply mode. What is special about those op-amp?

  • Akhilesh,

Single-supply terminology is used to emphasize the suitability of the op amp to work-off single supply in applications where the input common-mode (Vcm) and/or output voltage swing (Vout) need to extend at least to the negative rail (e.g. in mixed signal application).  Most of the modern single-supply op amps, however, are Rail-to-Rail I/O type meaning that the input common-mode range includes both positive and negative rail, and the output swing gets very close to both rails (the op amp output voltage may never completely reach neither of its rails without external pull-down or pull-up resistor).

Since op-amps specs are defined only with respect to their rails and the amplifiers have no internal ground, single-supply op amps can be used in dual-supply applications and dual-supply op amps may be used in single-supply applications as long as they are operated in a manner that does not violate the Vcm and Vout ranges.
