THS3217: Output spec vs. Electromigration Limit

Part Number: THS3217

Tool/software:

Page 6 of the datasheet indicates the minimum output drive is 50 mA.

However, the absolute max ratings table indicates, via footnote (2), that output current is limited to 30 mA due to electromigration limits.

Customer is using this in an application driving 50 Ohms and 50 mA could be required indefinitely.

Is there cause for concern here?

  • Hi,

The abs max current output spec is set to avoid electromigration which could lead to failure. However, this spec is with the idea that the device is sourcing/sinking 30mA for a long time (years) without turning off the device. If the customer plans on turning off the device at some point this spec wouldn't apply. For some clarity could you share what the setup the customer is using. Is the customer using the D2S portion of the circuit to drive this 50ohm load and not the output power amplifier?

    Best Regards,

    Ignacio

  • Please find schematic below, they are using the output power amplifier for the 50 Ohm load:

The configuration is below. The net that goes off to the right after the 2nd 24.9 Ohm resistor goes directly to the output. If this specification is only for the D2S then I think we are okay.

  • Hi,

That is correct, the output current drive of the power amplifier is 120mA typ, the difference amplifier portion is the one limited to 70mA typ.

    Best regards,

    Ignacio
