OPA2211 Power Pad Question

Hello,

I'm prototyping the OPA2211 ( SO-8 version) and have a couple of questions.  Does the device's performance degrade significantly if the power pad is not connected to the -Ve supply?  Also, is the device likely to malfunction if the pad is connected to ground?

    Hi Dan,

    Providing a proper connection to the substrate (-Ve) of these devices through the PowerPAD is recommended for both thermal and performance reasons.  The specifications in the datasheet are only guaranteed if the thermal pad is soldered appropriately.  However, although I think you will defeat the purpose of purchasing a high-quality low-noise amplifier like the OPA2211 if you do not solder the PowerPAD down.   I also think that the device performance degradation will not render the device unusable, it will just not perform as as it should. 

    The device will malfunction and likely draw excessive currents if the PowerPAD is connected to GND and the negative supply, V-, of the amplifier is not also connected to GND.
