OPA392: Low noise 2mA constant current source for laser diode

I was going through suitable options to drive low current laser diodes and found this post:

In this design they used 100mA current and I understand the NPN transistor is because of that but what if we use 2-3mA constant current, could we (or should we) drive the laser diode with just the opamp?

Or is there some better way to do it when 2-3mA current is used?

The main specification for the constant current driver would be:

  • Temperature where the device is operated is 25-50Celsius
  • laser current is somewhere in the range of 2-3mA
  • laser voltage is 1,8V to 2,6V depending the current
  • Supply voltage is 3,3V (if this is limiting factor we could up it slightly)
  • low noise 1Hz to 2000Hz area
