OPA598: Current Limit Specification

Part Number: OPA598
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA593

The OPA598 datasheet states the max current is 350 mA, but Sec 6.3.1 states the adjustable current limit range is only 100 to 250 mA.  This does not cover the max rated current of the device.  Is that a typo carried over from the OPA593 datasheet or is the 250mA max current limit intentional.

Thanks for you help!

  • Hi Duane, great question.

The typical ISC of OPA598 is 350mA, and the new current limit equation on OPA598 does enable a 350mA current limit to be set. I believe this 250mA does mostly derive from carryover on OPA593, though some of this may also exist as we do not production test the device more than 250mA. In my bench testing of the device, linear operation past ~320mA is very challenging due to thermal limitations, so a current limit spec less than 350mA certainly makes some sense.

The current limit circuitry can be set for any range between 10mA and 350mA, though accuracy will likely degrade with low current limits due to internal resistor inaccuracy, and current limits past about 300mA may degrade due to thermal/output swing limitations. This is likely why we have selected the range of 100mA to 250mA, effectively avoiding these two potential error regions. It is perfectly valid however to leverage current limits of 250mA+

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Best,
