TAS3251: DSP documentation

Part Number: TAS3251

The datasheet for the TAS3251 contains a very superficial register map of the device. TI encourages engineers to use PPC3 for DSP design. However I would like to be able to have more direct control over the design process. Is there more complete documentation about the the DSP core somewhere?

    Hi Peter,

    Are these process flows fixed and the only available options? I still get the impression that this just describes available pre-configured process flows rather than being an in-depth reference manual. Also, which process flow would be most appropriate for a 1.1 speaker configuration (bi-amped/dual mono)? 1.1 is mentioned in process flow 5 but it depicts two stereo outputs.

    Hi Alex,

    First, you’re absolutely right about the process flows. The application note details TI’s pre-configured reference flows, which are designed to show common use cases and help you get started quickly. These are not fixed or the only available options. The TAS3251’s DSP core is fully flexible, so you can customize these flows or build a completely custom signal chain to meet your specific requirements.
    For your 1.1 (bi-amped/dual mono) speaker configuration, Process Flow 5 is indeed the intended reference, even though it shows two stereo outputs. The diagram is generic; you would repurpose one of the output channels for your main speaker and the other for your subwoofer. You can then configure the DSP blocks to apply appropriate crossover filtering, EQ, and gain to each path independently.

    Thank you for your response. Does that mean that there is currently no full (publicly available) documentation for the DSP core registers, and PPC3? If so, will this be written at some point?

    Hi Alex,

    Yes. At this time, full low-level documentation for the TAS3251’s DSP core registers and PPC3 firmware is not publicly available. Our public support focuses on the higher-level PPC3 interface, the official datasheet, and the pre-configured process flows covered in the application note. We do not have immediate plans to release full public register documentation, but we are continuously improving PPC3 and its built-in help based on customer feedback. Thanks.
