TPA3116D2: TPA3116D2 Frequency Range ?

Part Number: TPA3116D2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV2911, DRV2901, DRV2700

Hello,

I was told by a colleague that the TPA3116D2 could operate from 50kHz to 100kHz.  Is this true ?  Not according to the datasheet.

We need an ~ 150Watt, 1% duty cycle, Class-D Power Amp that will indeed operate from 50kHz to 100kHz for an underwater acoustic ranging system.  We realize tht this will require an output transformer to step-up the voltage required by the piezoelectric transducer, and to match the impedance of the piezoelectric transducer.

What can you reccommend ?

Thanks

  • Hi Bob,

Please refer to the datasheet for all updated information on device capabilities. For output duty cycle, the available modulations schemes are BD and 1SPW. For the frequency operation, are you referring to the output switching frequency? The typical value for this is fs=400kHz as in the datasheet.
To help with device recommendation I have a few questions: What output speaker configuration will your application use? Are there PVDD limitations? What will be the speaker impedance?

    Regards,

    Isaac

  • Hello,

No speaker.  This PA would need to drive a 13nF piezoelectric acoustic transducer from 50kHz to 100kHz, at ~ 150Watts (~400Vpp), at a 1% duty cycle, with the addition of a step-up, impedance matching transformer ?
  • Bob,

For this application you would need to use one of the DRV parts, such as DRV2700, most of which are focused on lower frequencies below 20kHz. We do have DRV2901/DRV2911 which can support 20kHz-200kHz, but we don't have a piezo driver that can directly support the 400Vpp output at that frequency range.
