Dear TI Technical Support Team,
We are a manufacturer of defense electronic products. Our DPS-based 4-axis motor driver control board has been in mass production for approximately 8–9 years and uses eight (8) TL084IDR devices per unit.
We purchase TL084IDR directly from the TI website approximately one to two times per year, typically in quantities of 2,500 to 5,000 pieces per order. Due to this low-volume, infrequent procurement cycle, we did not complete a timely review of the following PCNs: PCN20221219006 & PCN20251003000.1
Recently, we applied TL084IDR devices purchased in December 2025 to production units. During our established final-product inspection, the units were rejected because the resistance measured at the
−15V input terminal exceeded our existing acceptance limit.
Test condition and results
Measurement point: −15 V input terminal of the completed product
Existing acceptance criterion: 52–56 kΩ
Result with previous/older TL084IDR lot: 53–54 kΩ - Pass
Result with TL084IDR purchased in December 2025: 65–66 kΩ - Fail
The −15 V input line includes several components, such as MLCC capacitors and diodes, and also supplies eight TL084IDR devices. Cross-testing confirmed that replacing the newly purchased TL084IDR devices with older devices returns the measured resistance to 53–54 kΩ. Conversely, installing the December 2025 devices produces a 65–66 kΩ result.
However, functional testing and actual motor-load testing were completed using both device lots. In both cases, all motor-driver functions and load operation were normal.
Therefore, we do not currently consider this to be a component failure; rather, we suspect that a change in device characteristics associated with the above PCNs may affect the measured resistance at the completed product’s −15 V input.
Request for TI Support
As a manufacturing company, our inspection criteria cannot be revised independently because they are tied to customer requirements. Technical evidence from TI is needed in order to request an update of the acceptance criterion from the ordering customer.
Please advise on the following points:
- Do PCN20221219006 and/or PCN20251003000.1 include any die, wafer-fabrication, assembly, material, internal-design, or test-process change that could alter the unpowered resistance measured from the -15 node?
- Although other components, such as MLCC capacitors and diodes, may also affect the measurement result, could the characteristics of the TL084IDR cause the measured resistance to increase from approximately 53–54 kOhm to 65–66 kOhm under the same test conditions?
- The currently observed phenomenon is a measurable difference between products built with the previous TL084IDR devices and those built with devices purchased in December 2025.
- Can TI provide electrical characterization data, a qualification summary, engineering assessment, or a formal statement regarding this observation and its expected effect on normal operation?
- Which guaranteed datasheet parameters should be used for incoming inspection and production acceptance instead of an unpowered PCB resistance measurement?
