DRV401

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV401

Dear All

DRV401 IC sensor signal conditioning IC for closed loop magnetic current sensing is designed to work with Vacuumschmelze (VAC) passive current sensors. I am trying to make it work with VAC part number 4645X050. The IC datasheet mentions the normal operational frequency range to be between 250kHz to 550kHz. What I get in my circuit is approximately 25kHz. This leads me to believe that the circuit is not working properly. Information in the datasheet does not provide any clues nor have I found any other source which may shed some light  on the issue.

Any help/suggestions/literature would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

  • Dear Mr. Khan,

I have just looked at the VAC website (http://www.vacuumschmelze.com/index.php?id=402) and could not really find the 4645x050 sensor. However I found the following part number 4645x060, which may be close.

Could you please clarify if by operational frequency you mean PWM frequency of the field probe?

I also wanted to let you know that VAC has an excellent application note on how to make their sensors work with the DRV401. The application note is titled "Applicational hints for the IC DRV401 with VAC current sensors" and can be downloaded on the page link above. Please let me know if you have difficulties downloading and I will send you an electronic copy. I also wanted to mention that , according to VAC's website they also offer evaluation kits, which have the passive sensor as well as the DRV401 on board.

VAC is actually your best source also for technical support as they are the system experts and intimately familiar with the DRV401.

  • Dear Mr. Haupt

    Thanks for your input.

You are correct the frequency I mentioned is the field probe's PWM frequency. Reading the specifications of 4645X050 and 4645X060 I noticed that "X050" is specified to work at +/-15V whereas "X060" is explicitly stated to work with DRV401 which is a 5V part. Could this be the reason of "X050" not working at the correct field probe PWM frequency?

  • Dear Mr. Khan,

yes, I think this could definitely have to do with what you are seeing. I have stumbled across the attached document, which shows the various passive sensors from VAC as well as the various Electronic circuits that VAC sells with the passive sensors. Page 7 shows the sensor models in a table and the column "Elektronik" "einphasig" (meaning Electronic single phase) specifies the number for the Eletcronic circuit to be "1". If you go to page 8 you can see this number crossreference in culum "Nummer" (meaning number). "1" is indeed a circuit for +/-15V passive sensors. Since this circuit does not contain a DRV401 I would assume that the PWM frequencies of the passive ssensor in conjunction with the electronics could be quite different. The electronic with DRV401 has the number "4" in that table.

    Best regards
