Hermetic seals of TO-99 metal package.

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA602

I need to use some OPA602 and OPA 128 TO-99 metal package OP-Amps in an Ultra High Vacuum chamber (approx. 10x-9 torr) for experimentation.

My questions are:

1. Is the TO-99 metal package hermetically sealed ?

2. If so what is the seal material ?

3. Will the seals and/or package contents out-gas in the ultra high vacuum ?

Any help is appreciated.

  • Michael,

Yes, these packages are hermetic. They are sealed with a welding process, clamped into circular electrodes and pulsed with high current. I'm am not confident that they are 100% tested to be hermetic as this test might only be performed on special performance grades of these devices. This is a robust process, however, and when we do test for this, failures would be rare.

    Regards, Bruce.
