Compensation coil and DRV401

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV401

Can I drive custom compensation coil with DRV401?

When I connect any compensation coil between Icomp1 and Icomp2 on DRV401, DRV401 do not have correct output when DEGAUS is activate. Shunt resistor is 10R. If I connect smd resistor 10R instead compensation coil, DRV401 have correct signal on shunt resistors, but if I connect any coil instead resistor, DRV401 do not have correct output.

Can I drive custom coil with DRV401 or I must use external buffer/driver?

  • Hello Bratislav Jankovic,

One important detail to keep in mind is that, as stated on page 19 of the DRV401 datasheet, the demagnetization cycle lasts for approximately 110ms. During this time, the Error flag is asserted low to indicate that the output is not valid and this is the expected behavior of the DRV401.

You can drive a custom coil directly with the DRV401 provided that a) the maximum current supplied by the compensation coil driver (250 mA typ.) can counteract the maximum current you desire to measure, and b) the voltage drop caused by the compensation coil current on the series combination of the compensation coil resistance plus shunt resistance never exceeds the maximum voltage swing of the driver (specified at 4.2 V for a 20 ohm load). If your application requires higher current or voltage, you can use an external driver for the compensation coil.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any further questions.

    Best regards,

    Jose
