Laser range finder using Si APD and OPA656

For my senior design project my team and I will be building a laser ranger finder using the OPA 656 TIA and an Si APD. The APD that we have choose is the Hamamatsu S5344. I understand that APDs achieve higher gain at higher bias voltages however, the question I have is exactly how high of a voltage is necessary to drive the APD?

  • Hello Robert,

The S5344 datasheet has a curve of gain vs reverse voltage and it cuts off below 130V where the gain is below 10.   What gain were you expecting?  It looks to me like around 140V is a good starting point.

This question may be better answered by a Hamamatasu applications engineer.

    Regards,
