I am finishing a design involving a G3-PLC communication modem through power ines. As analog front-end, I am using the AFE032 from Texas Instruments. Both the recommended design from TI and the component datasheet show 15V as the AFE032 supply voltage. The datasheet shows a supply range from 7V to 24V. In terms of robustness and reliability of the communication, is there a problem if I use 12V as AFE supply instead of 15V? Is it better to use 15V as TI recommends?

I would be very grateful if someone can help me with that.

    There are at least two advantages of choosing 15 V versus 12 V for the power amplifier supply voltage:

    1)      The capacity of your channel depends on the signal power injected by the transmitter as described by the Shannon–Hartley theorem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shannon%E2%80%93Hartley_theorem). The peak voltage output of the power amplifier in the AFE032 depends on its PA supply level. Therefore, higher supply levels allow you to signal with higher power.

    2)      For a system using a line coupling transformer, the TVS diodes used to protect the AFE032 power amplifier output should have a breakdown voltage as close as possible to ½ of the power supply level. It is typically easier to find TVS diodes with large power dissipation capabilities and typical breakdown voltages above 6.7 V.
