INA219B current direction

Hi!

Is it also possible to detect the current direction with the INA219?
I want to use it for monitoring charge/discharge of a battery.

I saw in the datasheet that there is a difference between the V_SHUNT input voltage of the 219 and 226. The 219 says "max: +/-40 mV" and the 226 "min: -81.9175 mV, max: 81.92 mV"

I assumed that the output of the 219 would be always positive but this is what I wanted to know.

Hi David,

INA219 can detect bidirectional current. The INA219 can sense a Vshunt of upto +/-320mV using the PGA divide by 8 setting. Please see below a snapshot from the datasheet Electrical spec table for other available Vshunt settings. Please let us know if you have more questions.

Hi David,
The INA219B is a bidirectional and can have inputs that are positive and negative. For the setting of PGA Gain = 1 the input range is -40mV to 40mV.

The output of the INA219B is digital and has a sign bit in the register to determine if the shunt voltage is positive or negative.
