OPA549 Heat Sink

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA549

Hello,

Would you have any recommendations for manufacturers/part numbers for a heat sink mounting hardware kit (thermal pad, shoulder washer & mounting hardware) for the OPA549S?

Thank you

  • Hi Jim,

The OPA549 datasheet in Figure 7 lists two heat sinks that are suitable for use with this power op amp. The two listed are the Aavid/Thermalloy 6396B-P2G (θHA= 5.6 °C/W) and 6399-P2G (θHA = 3.3 °C/W). These are good choices if their dimensions meets the user's requirements. Figure 7 provides the Maximum Power Dissipation vs Ambient Temperature for the thermal system based upon these heat sinks. Do note that in the text provided just below the Figure 7 graph that the two heat sink part numbers are switched. They are labeled correctly on the graph.

The OPA549 power tab is designated to be connected to the V- potential. If this is a single-supply application, then  V- is most often ground, or 0 V. In that case, the heatsink would be electrically attached to ground and no insulator would be needed between the OPA549 power tab and the heat sink. If the application uses dual supplies such as +/-30 V, then the power tab would need to be connected to -30 V. If the heat sink is electrically connected to ground, then the power tab would need to be insulated from the heat sink. In that case, we would need to identify an insulator and hardware that would work for the OPA549. The datasheet doesn't provide any part numbers for these components.

You can find information about these heat sinks at the Aavid/Thermalloy website:

  • That is good information. Thank you Thomas
