LM358 Questions

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM358

I'm looking at the LM358 for a 12V application.  I may have some unintended scenarios on my board and want to make sure the part is protected.

1-    What is the max voltage rating on the amplifier output?

2-    Looking at the amplifier schematic diagram, it makes me think that if we disconnect power (V+) from the amplifier we will have high impedance on the amplifier output. Is that a correct assumption? If so what would be the max output voltage rating when V+ is disconnected?  I'd like for it to have a voltage standoff of 32V.

3-    I need to be able to sink and source 45mA at the output.  It looks like the sink capability might be a little low on this part.  Am I correctly understanding the part's capability?

Might there be a better fit for my application?

  • Mike,

I must apologize for the response delay. Responding within 24 hours is my goal.

    1) Output should not be forced. However forcing down to GND is allowed if temperature is not excessive. Pulling up could be damaging and never force output above VCC.
    2) Inputs can have power applied before VCC, but outputs should not exceed VCC.
    3) That is too much sink current and sink current varies sample to sample. Adding an external PNP can increase sink current provided that the output always sinks (never sources)

Is your load terminated to voltage source other than 12V?
Can you describe the load characteristics and the bandwidth needed.?
