DC current monitor

I am just starting a DC welder/generator add-on design and am looking for cheap easy way to detect DC current flow. The voltage is variable 12 to 50 VDC with a normal current of 0 ADC and a possible maximum current of up to 30 ADC. I require a on/off signal that trips at ~1 ADC. Any ideas would be appreciated. I am going to build the circuit on a PCB for manufacture.

I would recommend checking out our video series on current sense measurement, which will give you some great insight into how you can implement a current monitor into your application. I have provided the link below:

It sounds like once you have chosen how you'd like to implement your system you'll need to configure your output into either a comparator or into a microcontroller that can monitor the measurement and respond accordingly to the value.
