XTR106: XTR106, LOAD CELL SHIELD WIRE

Part Number: XTR106

I am planning on using the XTR106 with a load cell in much the configuration shown in figure 5 of the data sheet.  My load cell has a shield wire.  Should the shield wire be connected to pin 6 (Iret)?

  • Hi Larry,

This is going to come down to the system function that the shield provides to the load cell. For example, if the purpose of the shield is to be driven to reduce the effects of leakage currents then it should be driven with a voltage roughly equal to the common-mode voltage of the load cell.
If the shield is for EMI/RFI immunity then it may connect to the IRET pin, or it may connect directly to the chassis/case of the final product with capacitive coupling to the signal wires to reduce the effects of conducted and radiated emissions/immunity. The difference in connections between IRET vs. a chassis connection will have to do with product safety and should be reviewed carefully by your team. If the shield is electrically connected to IRET then it will also have electrical potential relations to the loop-supply voltage which may or may not be okay in your final product.
