INA231: INA231 / AVG Bit Settings and VBUS CT Bit Settings

Part Number: INA231
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA220,

Hi,

Please let me ask about AVG Bit Settings and VBUS CT Bit Settings of INA231. AVG Bit Settings and VBUS CT Bit Settings can be configure individually, then can they configure with no limitation, for example 1024 averages and 140usec conversion time? I'm asking this because in case of INA220, the conversion time is fixed by Mode/Samples.

Best Regards,

Satoshi

  • Hi Satoshi,

Thank you for posting on the E2E Forums.

Yes and no... let me clarify:

The INA231 differs from the INA220 in that the latter has sampling times based on the effective resolution, while the former has a fixed 16 bit resolution output, independent of the sampling rate. So in that sense, settings can be configured individually to any supported configuration while keeping the effective resolution unchanged as given by the tables below:

    INA220:

    INA231:

Averaging works by taking a given number of samples and finding the average value... So the output for a 1024 average while sampling at the fastest 140uS conversion time is given by 140uS* 1024 readings = 143mS. As the device is multiplexed you also need to add the time for the current reading conversion result. The device is simply taking the overhead from the microprocessor in reading those 1024 samples and performing all the calculations.
