EVM Power Supply - Negative Supply Rail Implementation

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: THS4222

Hello,

I am looking to design an active filter system for the THS4222. I would like to provide it with a positive and negative supply.

I am looking at different bench-top power supply units. I am considering this unit:

Would I be able to generate a negative voltage by switching the + and - outputs? I figure that I would use the +5V fixed supply for the positive rail, and then use the adjustable output with switched terminals to generate the -5V supply for the negative rail.

Do you have any insight on this? Is there another power supply you recommend?

Thanks,

Alex

  • Hi Alex,

The power supply you are suggesting could be of interest for +/-5V device.  Note that you will not be able to use it for lower supplies such as ±2.5V.

Another power supply that is more flexible is the Agilent E3631A as you will have a negative ±25V adjuastable supply.

Otherwise you are correct, you can connect one power supply as positive voltage and one as negative voltage.  For that you will have to connect the negative of one supply to the positive of the other supply to create a common-ground, you can then proceed to connect the device on +Vs, GND and GND, -Vs.
