opa541: Output protection

Part Number: OPA541

Would it be wise to add a crow bar circuit at the output for extra protection? Or would this be counteracted by the current limiting function? I have .1 Rcl at the output to current sense.

Thanks

  • Hi Wilson,

It shouldn't be necessary to add an external crowbar circuit at the OPA541 output for extra protection. In fact, doing so may degrade the electrical performance of the circuit. The crowbar circuit could introduce some distortion that wouldn't be present without it. The current limiting circuit internal to the OPA541 should provide the necessary protection from a current standpoint.

What may be more useful from a protection standpoint is the addtion of the adding output clamping diodes to protect the OPA541 from the back EMF that can result when driving inductive loads. The inclusion of the diodes is illustrated in OPA541 datasheet Figure 13. The OPA541 datasheet was introduced quite a while ago and it lists 1N4003 diodes for the application. Newer, faster diodes for this are available such as the ES3BB.
