64 nodes plc over 48V line solution

hi all,

I have new task to find powerline communication IC over + 48V lines.

We want to dimm some 48V lighting by the command sent through power line.

It should be the "extension" of DALI bus, therefore it should have 64 nodes, 1200baud.

I found some demo on your web: http://www.ti.com/solution/power_line_communication_modem

Let’s consider G standard. It is suitable for low bit rate (DALI).

The question is if it can manage 64 pcs of slaves over +48V line?

if not, what could you propose?

any advice is more than welcome

Vincenzo

  • Hello Vincenzo,

All of my colleagues responsible for these products are currently out of the office, but I am looking through our products for a possible solution. Additionally, maybe people from the C2000 team or other embedded teams who we partner with in developing our evaluation modules and reference designs could assist in this as well.

  • Hello Vincenzo,

Given the baud rate of 1200 the G3 standard is capable of handling the data rate.  The question on whether the communication is feasible for 64 nodes is dependent on the following parameters.

    • Drive capability of the power op-amp of the AFE03x device
    • The equivalent impedance of the 64 slaves in parallel that the output of the power op-amp sees
    • The impedance of the power supply (DC-DC converters) used to generate +48V line (may need inductors to increase impedance at the communication frequencies)
    • Amplitude of the received signal for desired SNR

I have attached a link to a ti design that shows how to couple to a DC line with our PLC products.  Let me know if you have any questions; I am happy to help.
