OPA2197: Max Current vs Full Range Input

Part Number: OPA2197
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA197

I have a customer who wants to know why the device has a max current of =/- 10 mA, if the full range input to input is rail to rail? Also, needs a description of the input architecture

  • Hi Devon,

I'm not sure I understand your customer's question or where the +/- 10mA limitation is coming from. There is no relationship between the input stage having a rail to rail architecture and the current drive capability of the output stage, and the OPA197 is capable of driving 65mA out (though not with rail to rail output swing). The input stage is described in figure 50 of the datasheet (see below)

  • 10mA max input current limitation comes from max rated current of forward biased ESD protection diodes located  between input and each supply voltage when the input is driven above or below one of the rails - see Fig 52.
