INA240: help in part selection

Part Number: INA240
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA199,

Hello team ,

my customer Schneider is looking for selecting a current sense amplifier for high side current measurement .

the switching frequency is @ 20Khz ,

and current levels are around 50A

please help us clarify the difference between the following 2 parts

INA199

and

INA240

We need help in choosing the right part for this application

  • Hello Shreenidhi,

You can directly compare parts on Ti.com by going to the products page, selecting the two parts, and clicking the red compare button that will light up once multiple parts are selected. You can then export the comparison as a downloadable file. The following comparison is pasted below.

You will see that the INA240 has a higher common-mode input range, so if your system will have a common mode voltage > 26V on the high-side then you will not be able to use INA199. The INA240 has “Enhanced PWM Rejection”, which is to say that it can reject/suppress sharp changes in the common-mode voltage. This means it is suitable for in-line applications in addition to low-side or high-side applications.

The INA240 is also a chopper amplifier and thus has a lower input offset and should work fine with a 20kHz signal, although might not settle as fast to step responses as the INA199 can since the INA199 is a linear amplifier. If you choose the INA199, it would have to be at least the 100V/V gain variant (30kHz BW) and if this is not fast enough then definitely the 50V/V gain variant, which has 80kHz BW.
