TINA/Spice/OPA170: OPA170AIDR -replacement for cheaper IC

Part Number: OPA170
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TINA-TI, TLV8801, , TLV170, LM2903, TLV4170

Tool/software: TINA-TI or Spice Models

Dear Sir, please answer

I used OPA170AIDR, please, see attach.

Input signal source - signal from current transformer. Input signal 15...1500 mV, 50 Hz. Circuit designed for  current measurement using current transformer.

U3- dif amp

U1 -rectifier

U2- filter

Sircuit works well - I checked.

Is it possible to replace OPA170AIDR  to cheaper IC?  May be TLV8801? Is it TINA model for this IC? Can it be possible to choose IC in the same package as OPA170AIDR ?

TIA

Sincerely

Vladimir Naumenkov

  • Hi Vladimir,

The TLV8801 will not work in your current design because the maximum supply voltage is only 5.5V and you are using 10V. Also the bandwidth of the devices is 200 times less than the OPA170.

I recommend to take a look at the TLV170. If the TLV170 will not work for you please provide me with a list of specifications your design requires such as offset voltage, bandwidth, quiescent current, etc. and I will look at other options for you.

    Thank you,

  • Dear Tim, thank you
    1) I still plan to use LM2903 comparator in my circuit. Is there a TINA-TI model for it? Can I use the PSpice model of LM2903 in TINA-TI ?

    2) How do you think: is there any sense in doing my circuit (with 3 Op Amps) using TLV4170 on two-layer PSB?( I can use 0603 size resistors and capaciors). Or is it better to take 3 pcs TLV170?

    My design:
    3) Input frequency is 50 Hz, then I believe that the amplifier with a very small frequency band will do
    4) Quiescent current - 5....10 mA suitable
    5) Offset voltage - 3...5 mV suitable
    6) Power supply +/- 5V, rail-to-rail output

    TIA

  • Dear Tim, sorry, I found TINA-TI model for TLV170!!!
  • Hi Vladimir,

It sounds like the TLV170 will work in your design and there is a TINA-TI model provided online for the TLV170. If the TLV170 will not please let me know.

For the LM2903, I recommend starting a new thread on the forum for the LM2903 because that device is supported by a different group.

If my response has answered all of your questions please click the green "This resolved my issue" button.

    Thank you,

  • Hello Vladimir,

Yes. The LM2903 has a SPICE model and it can be used in any SPICE compatable simulator (including Tina).

It is in the "Tools & Software" tab of the LM2903 product folder:

    TitleCategoryTypeSize (KB)DateViews
LM2903 PSpice Model PSpice Model ZIP 0 KB 10 Jan 2002 664 views

Model filneme extension is a little strange, but it is an older style siginifting it is specified to the 5V specs. Rename the extention to whatever is required by your tool.
