Recommendation appeal

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA564

Can anyone recommend a suitable power amplifier for driving a current of about 1.5A over a requency range of about 200 kHz - 5 MHz with a varying load?

I've looked and can't find one that fits these requirements. It seems to be too high a frequency for audio and too low for RF.

  • Steve,

Please take a look at OPA564.   Its bandwidth (17MHz) and output current drive (1.5A) does meet your stated requirements.

  • Hi Steve,

Marek's OPA564 recommendation is as close to a solution as we can come with an operational-amplifier based solution. You didn't mention your supply voltage, or the required output voltage swing. The OPA564 data-sheet provides the maximum output voltage swing vs. frequency in Figures 15 and 16, by supply voltage. You will see that the maximum swing becomes quite limited at 5MHz, but it may be sufficient for your application. I do believe that there is labeling error in Figure 15 and it actually represents the single-supply +12V case, and Figure 16 is the true +/-12V case. Note that if your applied waveform has fast edges that the OPA564's slew rate (17V/us) may not be fast enough to follow it and slew rate limiting could occur.

I would have to agree with you that your requirement is in a region somewhere between audio and RF. Most often such applications employ a discrete, broadband RF amplifier solution; however, the OPA564 may provide an alternate solution.
