INA219: AC MAINS 220V CURRENT SENSING

Part Number: INA219
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA260, INA220, INA226, ISOW7842

Hello

I need to measure power consumption for an AC appliance. what ti part can i use for this purpose?

I need something like ACS712 but i need a TI part.

Thank You

  • Hello Akarsh,

Welcome to the E2E Current Sensing forum!

Unfortunately we don't have a Hall-effect sensor at present that is optimized for current sensing. You can, however, design discrete signal paths using one of our current shunt monitors (like the INA219 or another product with low input offset) to make floating measurements. For an example on how to do this, please refer to:

    www.ti.com/.../tidudp5.pdf

The design referenced above uses the INA260 which has an internal 2mOhm shunt rated for 15A max DC current. As you can see the value of the shunt is comparable to the parasitic resistance of the internal conductor (1.2mOhm) on the ACS712. So the power loss will be comparable.

Alternatively, since this is an AC current sensing application, you can consider using a current transformer with a current shunt monitor to make an isolated current measurement.

  • Hi harsha

Can I use the INA260 setup to measure AC?

I cannot use the current transformer setup as the application on which I'm working on requires AC power measurement using TI parts only.

    Thanks

  • Hi Akarsh,

You can use the INA260 in the configuration discussed in the reference design as long as the max current you are measuring is less than 15A. If the max current is greater than 15A you will have to use an external shunt resistor with the appropriate power rating and a different digital current shunt monitor such as the INA219, INA220 or INA226 also operating on floating power supplies as shown in the doc.

  • Hi Harsha,
In my case I need to measure current upto 5Amp. Voltage would be 220Volts 50Hz. Please confirm that this power measurement can be done by the INA260 and i shall order the parts.
    Thanks!
  • Hello Akarsh,

Yes, the INA260 will work with AC common-mode voltages as long as you operate it on floating supplies. Once again, the TI design document www.ti.com/.../tidudp5.pdf shows how the ISOW7842 can be used to conveniently float the INA260 and get data back across the isolation barrier to your MCU. Please be sure to adhere to the layout guidelines described in the ISOW7842 datasheet for low EMI.

    Best Regards,

    Harsha
