LM358: Alternate for LM358 with better output current capacity

Part Number: LM358
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM7321, TL052, LMV358, THS4052, TLV172, MC1458, TLC072, LM7322

Hi,

I am using LM358 OPAMP to amplify 3.3V to 12V. This OPAMP capable of giving output current of 20mA.

New requirement has come load current increased to 40mA

Now I am looking for replacement for LM358 OPAMP with higher output current. Preferably same package.

Below is my requirement.

  • Single Supply voltage +15V
  • OPAMP should be capable of giving 40mA output current at full operating condition

I have looked into LM7321. In datasheet output current is not clearly mentioned for full operating condition.

can anyone suggest alternate OPAMP for LM358.

  • Hi Ravi,

    Thanks for your quick response.

42 mA is for full operating condition means it includes temperature variation of 0 to 70 degrees.??

Also i was looking at THS4052. Below is the output current

will it good if I use THS4052.

    Thanks & Regards,

    Pavithra

  • Hi Pavithra,

Yes, full operating condition means full operating temperature range. I looked into THS4052, this part will work for you but it's a high speed part (Slew rate = 240 V/us), it's more expensive and not a similar match for LM358. Some devices that I would recommend are: TL052, MC1458, TLC072, TLV172. Please let us know if you any other questions.

  • Hi Ravi,

How much will be the price increase if I am using THS4052.

I my circuit, I am amplifying 3.3V to 12V using non inventing amplifier configuration. Load on 12V output is 30mA. supply voltage to OPAMP is +15V and Ground(single supply)

Below is my concern for other parts you referred, parts

TL052: As per waveform Figure 26, with Vcc=15V, if I am drawing output current of 30mA then Maximum Peak Output Voltage will reduce 5V -- hence not suitable.

MC1458: Short-circuit output current is +/-25mA(typ) - my requirement is 30mA -- hence not suitable

TLC072: As per figure7 waveform, if I am drawing output current of 30mA VOH<12V. This waveform is for VCC=12V. No graph is provided for VCC15V -- can please check confirm if I am operating with VCC=15V whether output voltage will >12V??

TLV172: As per datasheet figure5 waveform if I am drawing output current of 30mA still I will get ouput voltage of >13V. Looks okay for my application. I will check in detail. Please tell me the cost difference with respect to LM358

Also I was looking into one more device LM7322. in datasheet under electrical characteristic's minimum output Current 40mA is mentioned. can you please check and confirm me whether this applies to full operating temperature of 0degrees to 70degrees and output voltage of 12V.

    Looking forward your response.

    Thanks & Regards,

    Pavithra

  • Hi Pavithra,
The 1k cost of THS4052 is $2.02, whereas the 1k cost of LM358 is $0.07.

TLC072: If you're using VCC = 15V, this should fit your application. 1k cost of this device is $0.79.
TLV172: The 1k cost of this device is $0.38.
LM7322: The 1k cost of this device is $0.97. This is a rail-rail input and output device. So this will work for your application. From table 7.3, we can see that the operating temperature range is -40C to 125C.

    I hope this helps!

  • Thanks Ravi.

    Planning to use TLV172IDR.
