TINA/Spice/OPA1611: TINA-TI transient simulation fails after reaching 90%

Part Number: OPA1611
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TINA-TI, , THS4031

Tool/software: TINA-TI or Spice Models

I am simulating a differential amplifier that uses composite amplifier techniques using an OPA1611 and THS4031, and I am looking at the step response stimulating using a 50Hz square wave and simulating from 9.999 ms to 10.001 ms to look at time domain response.

The model has been simulating just fine, but I tweaked some values, and now the simulation will not complete.  It hangs at the 90% level.  The preview button does not display any useful information, inly displaying a since vertical line from -730u to 590u at 9.01 ms (which should not be part of the simulation).

How do I trouble shoot these types of issues in TINA-TI?

  • Hi Tim,

If you provide your TINA-TI schematic as an attachment I can assist you better with debug, but there are a couple of things I can recommend right off the bat:

    1. The OPA1611 SPICE model was just updated a few weeks ago. Download the newest version from the "Tools and Software" tab of the product page in order to get the highest accuracy, compatibility, and convergence performance.
    2. You can adjust the SPICE analysis parameters to make it easier for the simulator to converge in a transient analysis. To do this, in the menu bar click "Analysis" --> "Set Analysis Parameters" to open the Analysis Parameters window. In this window, click the pointing hand icon on the bottom-right, then click "Open...", then load the preset "Transient Convergence Solutions." Try your simulation again and see if the simulator can get all the way through it.

  • Thanks Ian, I tried out the "Transient Convergence Solutions," and the same issue occurred. I have tried playing around with some of the values I changed to remove them from circuit, but the simulation always fails at 90%.

I have only recently started using TINA-TI, so my download and install was after the OPA1611 release (thank you to TI BTW for updating this model :) My version is 9.3.150.328, and while I checked, I don't see a way to verify the model version. I assume there is, I am just not super familar with TINA-TI yet.

Alos tried rebooting my machine, and restarting the simulator with no behaviour change, always fails at 90%. Note that this is not a hard fail where I get an error, the simulation just never moves beyond 90%. What is really odd is I have another version of the circuit.

Even stranger, I had an earlier version of the circuit saved, I backed out the changed on the circuit that will not complete, and it still can't get passed 90%.

I can e-mail you the files, but I can't post them publicly.
  • Hi Tim,

Please e-mail me your simulation files at ian@ti.com and I can review them further.

  • Hi Tim,

We resolved your convergence issues offline. If you are satisfied with the resolution, please mark this thread as resolved. Thank you!

  • My pleasure, Tim. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance, and have a great weekend!
