Photodiodes (with preamps) saturate in direct sunlight?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPT101Good day, Quick question on two of the TI optoelectronic products, OPT101 and OPT301 (both are photodiodes with included preamp). Proposed application: Mount three photodiode/preamp ICs orthogonal to each other. Place outside such that all three photodiodes are lit by incident sunlight. Measure voltage reported by each. Compare to reference value of sunlight directly overhead to determine incident angle. Three incident angles on on three orthogonal planes will define a sun-pointing vector. Questions: 1) Can the OPT301 or OPT101 handle direct sunlight without saturating? I see that both have incident light-output voltage responsivities that rely on the value of their feedback resistor, and that this resistor value can be changed. Can it be reduced enough to allow direct sunlight on these photodiodes? 2) Is the OPT301 still available for samples and testing? I understand it has been deprecated, but the symmetry of its angular response would be preferred (as opposed to the OPT101, which has different curves specified for theta_x and theta_y). ~ Any help or redirection of my query would be appreciated.     Putting a simple neutral density filter in front of each photodetector will attenuate the sunlight. Pick an ND number that attenuates the sunlight enough-- probably something like an ND 4.0 (these ND numbers go in logarithmic steps). Look for ND filters in Edmund Scientific; they may have some inexpensive plastic filters.
