Hello,

We are looking for the maximum pulse voltage that can withstand the inputs of TLV3404, TLC393 and THS4524. The pulse width is from 10 to 500µs. Could you help us?

  • In each instance the answer is different. For the tlv3404, the inputs can be driven 5v beyond the power supply.  For the tlc393, the inputs can be driven to the supply level. And for the ths4524, this device is an amplifier that is not rail to rail input and should be limited to a voltage more than a volt below the supply voltage. It varies slightly at different voltages.

    The one exception in all three instances is that the pulse voltage can exceed the rated voltages if the current into the input pins is limited below 5ma. For each device you will find an abs max rating for the input pins. These specs do not define the operating range of the inputs but they are an indication of how much voltage each input can handle without being damaged.

    I agree with Chuck. The clear answer is: You must never violate the specified absolute maximum ratings, not even very briefly!

    In a 500µs overvoltage pulse is enough energy to totally destroy the chip and to cause latch-up. So, it's wise to always suppress overvoltages by the help of clamping techniques. Simple low pass filtering can also be very useful.
