Wil I need isolation circuitry for an EMG?

Will I need isolation circuitry for detection a EMG signal? I will be using a +9V battery to power the system. I planned to use an instrumentational amplifier to acquire the signal .  If so, can I just put large resistors running to ground at the inputs of each channel ? 

  • I assume that you are referring to galvanic isolation such that signals are transferred through a optical coupler, transformer or other such device. If your device is totally self-contained, not connected to any other instruments, equipment or external displays and is well insulated, galvanic isolation may not be needed. Any other type of situation demands galvanic isolation. There are many regulations, standards and precautions involved in selling devices that connect electrodes to the human body. You must be well informed before proceeding. If this is a one-off laboratory setup, proceed at your own risk. Do I dare say, "Knock yourself out?"

    Input resistors from input to ground of an instrumentation amp may be helpful in biasing the amplifier properly. They have no bearing, however, on the isolation issue.
