VCA824: Power meter with four-quadrant multiplier

I would like to use VCA824 as a power meter, by the use of the four quadrant multiplier as described in page 28 of the datasheet.

My goal is to measure output power from an inverter, so input signals are inverter output volatge and output current, scaled in voltage and isolated from main line.

Vin and Vg are ±2V, one is square wave (inverter voltage) and the other sine wave (inverter current) with some phase shift. Frequecy is the same for both signals and changes in the range 300-1000 kHz.

Following equation 11 to have Vout range from 2V to -2V , i need R1=Rg=2Rf.

My question is: can I use VCA824 as power meter with these input signals? Is it feasible?

In Figure 76 circuit , which is the role of R2 and R3?

  • Hi Nicola,

    According to my simulation model, you will have to divide down both inputs to the +-1V range in order for this function to work, and there will be an offset. The role of R2 and R3 is simply impedance matching, as well as keeping the inputs impedance balanced.
