Hi All

I would like to know the exactly what would happen if the input common mode voltage of the device goes outside the specifed range of -4V to +80V:

a) Would the device get damaged?

b) Would I just get an erroneous output?

c) If the current into the input pins is limited to some 'low' value would the device still get damaged?

Basically in my application I can tolerate erroneous output but not a damaged device. Any insight into the matter would be greatly appreciated.

    Here are the answers to your questions:

    a)     Yes it would.

    b)     Yes you’ll get erroneous output if the device is damaged. Otherwise as long as the common mode voltage remains in spec, the performance will remain in-spec as well. Even if the common mode is slightly out of spec, as long as the device is not damaged (ie, it is protected as you suggested), there shouldn’t be drastic degradation in performance. Besides this degradation is likely much smaller than that caused by external protection circuitry. We generally don’t recommend such protection circuitry because of its impact on device performance.

    c)     No, if you limit the current, generally to a few mA, the device won’t be damaged
